Overview
- Existing Cube Spawn Sub-Projects
Introduction
CubeSpawn consists of small scale module based factories which make their own parts, and make many additional things as well.
A user created parts library will allow anyone to make useful parts and tools at near the cost of materials and energy and contribute designs, creating a non proprietary way to access whatever resources are needed to accomplish personal, or small community, developement goals.
Raw materials for the production system will rely heavily on recyclable and recycled component materials - to foster self reliance.
A "Cube" form factor makes all the machines standard, so that they can be linked together to form assembly lines, in addition, each machine has a pallet mover in the base to transport workpieces between cubes.
Plans for the first machine will be made freely available as they are developed. Kits will be available as well, for those who do not have the time, or tools to build one from scratch.
The CubeSpawn concept is that the initial machines will be designed to have a minimum number of unique parts, making it easier to replicate (self manufacture) with minimum additional resources
The First machine design is a 3 axis CNC mill. It will be used to make parts for additional cubes. In this way the system can add features to itself. At some point, the factories abilities will meet its requirements allowing full replication. One of the main goals is to keep costs as low as possible so that anyone can build one.
This is a realistic way to start a technology like "Star Trek's" replicator, but with real technology thats available today.
A library of parts and motion control will be stored in the system and distributed through the Internet, so making parts can be as automatic as possible. Fictional technologies are easy - this will be difficult, "but ya gotta start somewhere..."
